Success Story

From Extreme Labs to India’s largest IX

In 2015, Extreme Labs built Extreme IX to connect India’s internet. A decade later, with 48 PoPs, 421 members, and nearly 5 Tb/s of peak traffic, it joined Megaport — proving that world-class infrastructure can be born anywhere.

Market Leadership

53% of India's IX capacity

At the time of acquisition, Extreme IX commanded 26 Tb/s of provisioned capacity — over half of India's total internet exchange market and more than double the next largest operator. Data sourced from the IXP Ecosystem platform.

The Journey

2015

Founded by Extreme Labs

Extreme Labs launched Extreme IX to solve India’s peering gap — giving ISPs, CDNs, and content providers a carrier-neutral, data-center-neutral exchange to interconnect locally and reduce latency.

2017

Expansion across India

Rapid growth across key metros including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Kolkata. Extreme IX became the go-to platform for networks seeking low-latency, cost-effective peering.

2020

India’s largest IX

Surpassed all domestic competitors to become India’s largest carrier-neutral Internet Exchange by member count, port density, and traffic volume.

2023

Crossing 4 Tb/s peak traffic

Traffic milestones accelerated as more content, cloud, and enterprise networks joined the platform. Peak traffic crossed 4 Tb/s with 48 PoPs across 7 cities.

2025

Acquired by Megaport

Megaport, a global leader in Network as a Service with 1,000+ locations across 26 countries, acquired Extreme IX — combining India’s strongest IX footprint with a global SDN platform.

What Comes Next

Joining Megaport combines Extreme IX’s India footprint with a global NaaS platform — unlocking new capabilities for every partner.

Global SDN Access

Partners gain access to Megaport’s software-defined network spanning 1,000+ locations and 410+ service providers in over 26 countries.

On-Demand Cloud Connectivity

Direct, on-demand private connectivity from Extreme IX locations to major cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud via Megaport.

Continued Neutrality

Extreme IX continues to operate as a carrier-neutral, data-center-neutral exchange, open to all qualifying networks with their own AS and address space.

No Disruption

Existing ports, VLANs, peering sessions, and routing policies remain unchanged. SLAs and service terms continue to apply as before.

Bundled Interconnection

Future capabilities include bundled offers combining peering, cloud access, and data center interconnects for joint customers.

Extreme Labs Unaffected

Extreme Labs is a separate entity and is not part of the Megaport acquisition. All products — CacheMaster, NetSense, and more — continue as-is.

A Proud Moment

Built across two continents, recognised globally

For the three Bulgarian founders and the dedicated teams in India and Bulgaria, the Megaport acquisition is more than a business milestone. It is a testament to ten years of relentless engineering, bold bets on India's internet future, and the belief that world-class infrastructure doesn't need a Silicon Valley postcode. What started as a vision to close India's peering gap grew into the country's largest IX — and is now part of a global platform serving networks on every continent.
